BETHESDA, Md. (AP) -

Navy officials say an officer has fired a shot at a car that tried to hit him at a gate at a military installation in Bethesda.

It happened shortly before noon at the military installation that includes the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. A spokesman for Naval Support Activity Bethesda says a passenger vehicle hit another car while leaving the North Gate.

The spokesman said when Naval security officers tried to intervene, the driver tried to hit one of them with her car. An officer fired his weapon, but authorities do not know if the driver was hit.

Officials said the driver hit a Naval Support Activity patrol car with an officer inside.

Authorities say the driver fled off base and Montgomery Country police pursued her.
