Snow began falling in Columbia, Maryland at around 1 p.m, and as it did, photos, emails and phone calls came to our newsroom -- white Christmas?

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a winter weather advisory in effect until 8 p.m. due to a concern of snow and sleet in the area, and the closer the clock got to 8 p.m., the harder the white stuff seemed to fall.

NWS forecasters said snow and sleet was to be expected in areas that included but were not limited to northern Baltimore County, northern Howard County and northern Montgomery County.

Meanwhile, the forecasts of freezing rain, sleet and snow scrambled state highway crews, especially those in western Maryland.

The State Highway Administration said Monday it has crews out from Frederick west to make sure roads were salted and passable on Christmas Eve.

Highway administration spokesman David Buck said he didn't expect major problems. He said the storm is expected mainly during daytime hours, when temperatures should be high enough to prevent icing.

Parts of Garrett County got up to 10 inches of snow over the weekend.

Accumulation?

The NWS said one to two inches of wintry mix was expected in the areas listed above, and less than an inch was to be expected in surrounding areas.

Those driving were told to expect roads to become slippery and visibility to be limited.
