BALTIMORE - As new tighter gun control laws are set to take effect next month, elected officials have joined with community activist to launch a new radio ad campaign to tout the benefits of the legislation.
Leading proponents of the legislation, including House Speaker Michael Busch, Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and state Sen. Brian Frosh are among those that worked to enact the Firearms Safety Act of 2013. The ad will run in the Baltimore media market through Oct. 1, when the law take effect.
"This radio ad, featuring a police chief, a bishop, a mom and a hunter, explains how the handgun fingerprint licensing provision in the Firearms Safety Act of 2013, will save lives by keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and others who should not have them," said Vincent DeMarco, President of Marylanders to Prevent Gun Violence. "We will run this ad through the October 1 effective date of the law to educate Maryland citizens and policy makers about the life-saving benefits of our new gun violence prevention law."
The campaign coincides with a push by gun owners to purchase certain weapons that will soon be banned and before new purchasing requirements take effect which includes needing a“handgun qualification license." This means in addition to a background checks, those purchasing a handgun must complete a firearm safety and proficiency course and be fingerprinted.
The unusually large number of gun purchases has led to a large backlog of processing gun permit applications by Maryland State Police . To combat the backlog, state police turned to five state agencies to help input the applications and other law enforcement organizations to assist with the background checks.
