MARYLAND -

Maryland's Jockey Club, Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association and Horse Breeders Association have reached a 10-year agreement for both Pimlico and Laurel race tracks.

The agreement will insure stability in what has been an unstable business.

The 2013 season will be a guaranteed 146 days of live racing, and at least 100 days per year for the remainder of the contract. There is a possibility for more days of racing beyond the 100, which is welcome news to the industry.

The deal also calls for Pimlico and Laurel Park to remain open for year-round racing, training and stabling for the balance of the contract. Pimlico and Laurel would maintain a minimum of 1,900 stalls.

Members of the racing industry hope this contract is a game changer.  Horse farms in jeopardy could now be saved.
