WASHINGTON (AP) - Metro is implementing a minimum balance requirement for SmarTrip cards to enter the transit system, and SmarTrip users can add money to their cards online.

Beginning Saturday, the transit agency is requiring riders to have at least $1.20 on their SmarTrip cards to enter the Metrorail system. For riders using a senior or disabled rider card, the minimum is 35 cents.

Metro is encouraging more people to use the plastic, rechargeable SmarTrip cards as well. Beginning Saturday, customers who purchase a new $5 SmarTrip card will be able to get a $3 rebate when they register their card online.

Registering a SmarTrip card online also allows Metro riders to add money to their cards through Metro's website.
