Md.probes cadmium emissions at Fort Detrick

HURLOCK, Md. -
Maryland environmental officials are investigating following the discovery of elevated levels of cadmium from a municipal waste incinerator at Fort Detrick.
The Frederick News-Post says a spokesman for the state Department of the Environment wouldn't discuss the specifics of the investigation, but that it involves possible violations of operations and procedures. The spokesman, Jay Apperson, called it an "active investigation."
The department notified Fort Detrick officials in August that the levels of cadmium emitted from the incinerator were higher than allowed under the state permit.
A Fort Detrick spokesman says the post is continuing to work with regulators.
Cadmium is a toxic metal often found in industrial workplaces and is also commonly used in batteries.
