WASHINGTON (AP) - Senator Ben Cardin is holding a hearing on a natural gas drilling technique that has environmentalists worried.
Cardin plans to hold a hearing Tuesday in Washington on the technique known as hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. The Maryland senator chairs the Water and Wildlife Subcommittee. Cardin says he will chair the hearing along with California Sen. Barbara Boxer, who heads the Environment and Public Works Committee.
Fracking involves the high-pressure injection of chemically treated water into a gas well to crack surrounding shale and release trapped natural gas. The industry says fracking is well-regulated and safe, but opponents fear it could contaminate water supplies.
The technique is being used in the Marcellus Shale formation runs beneath western Maryland, western Virginia, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, New York and Ohio.
