Md. Rep.'s aide in trouble over candidacy papers

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- A congressional staffer apparently erred by working for a Maryland representative while simultaneously being a candidate for the member's seat.
 
The Washington Post reports that the staffer for Rep. Roscoe Bartlett, a Maryland Republican, fixed what Bartlett's office called a "clerical error" Thursday after being contacted by the paper.
 
Payroll records show the aide, Alex Mooney, has been on Bartlett's staff since June. In March, however, he filed a so-called "statement of candidacy" for the 2014 race with the Federal Election Commission. The House ethics manual says that if a congressional employee wants to succeed his boss in office, the staff member must "terminate his or her employment in the congressional office upon becoming a candidate."
 
Mooney did not respond to a request for comment from the paper.
