OLDTOWN, Md. (AP) -

The Allegany County Sheriff's Office has charged a man deputies say hit his father with a tire iron.

Forty-eight-year-old Joseph Henry Dowell is charged with assault and reckless endangerment.

Deputies say about 2:35 a.m. Sunday, Joseph Dowell and his father, 68-year-old Calvin Dowell, were in a car in Oldtown. Authorities say Joseph Dowell got a tire iron from the truck of the vehicle, shattered the window where Calvin Dowell was sitting and repeatedly hit Calvin Dowell with the implement.

Deputies said that Calvin Dowell cut his son with a pocket knife before fleeing into the woods.

Calvin Dowell had injuries to his hands and one leg and was treated at the scene.
