(WMAR) -

An Army officer from Maryland died Monday in Afghanistan, military officials said.

Capt. Sara M. Knutson, 27, of Eldersburg was killed March 11, during a training mission in Kandahar, Afghanistan. The 2007 West Point graduate died after the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter she was on crashed during a heavy rainstorm in Daman district. Five soldiers, including Knutson, died in the  wreck.

There were no reports of enemy fire at the time of the crash. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

The Pentagon said in a release that Knutson was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, Hunter Army Airfield, Ga.

Capt. Knutson was a 2003 graduate of Liberty High School in Eldersburg. She studied law at West Point and was a member of the Judo team. She married a former Black Hawk pilot in November 2012 and was deployed to Afghanistan in January 2013.

Since the news of her death, eulogies have flooded a West Point alumni website. One with the subject line ‘Liberty High School Class of 2003’ reads, “ Our heartfelt condolences go out to you. We are humbled by Sara’s service and ultimate sacrifice for our nation. We pray that God’s grace carries you gently through your grief.”
