FREDERICK, MD - Some ladies are taking to the friendly skies in the Air Race Classic. Dozens of female pilots are flying cross country over nine states with the finish line on Friday in Frederick, Maryland.
The event is not about who lands first. It's about a push to encourage more women into aviation. Pilots range from 18 to 92-years-old. Each female pilot is in a race of her own.
The four day event kicked off in Fort Myers, Florida. The Southwest Florida team may have an edge on their competition being the only twin engine.
"Some of the first pioneering aviators such as Amelia Earhart and the like created the 99s because they enjoyed the fellowship and wanted to promote women in avaiation," said Kristen Jurn, a pilot.
The ladies are expected to land at Frederick Municipal Airport on Friday.
