Harris explains his vote against Sandy aid

  Rep. Andy Harris, who represents Maryland's Eastern Shore in Congress, is explaining why he voted against a $9.7 billion package for Superstorm Sandy relief.

 

   The bill aimed at helping the region recover from the October storm passed the House on Friday with a vote of 354 to 67. All the no votes were from Republicans. The bill replenishes funding for the National Flood Insurance Program, which was set to run out of money next week.

 

   Harris represents hard-hit areas of Crisfield and Ocean City. 

 

   The Daily Times reports that Harris wanted the bill to include reforms of the flood insurance program. Harris is now the only Republican in Maryland's congressional delegation.

 

   Harris says Congress should have used the bill to strengthen the program, rather than write "another blank check."
