BALTIMORE - Governor Martin O'Malley has signed and executive order declaring a state of emergency for all Maryland counties as the state continues to monitor Hurricane Sandy and its potential impact.

The declaration gives the state flexibility to activate the Maryland National Guard and provide assistance to local emergency managers.

The declaration, among other things, also requires the director of the Maryland Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) to coordinate activities as needed to alleviate the emergency; authorize the development and use of resources; authorize the use and distribution of supples, equipment and materials; permit the governor to suspend the effect of statutes and regulations of the state if applicable and activate the National Guard to provide assistance.

"As Hurricane Sandy makes its way north, I urge all Maryland residents to prepare for extreme weather," Governor O'Malley said. "I urge all Marylanders to review their family emergency plans, make sure their emergency supplies like batteries and water are fully stocked and to stay informed."

O'Malley's decision to declare a state of emergency came within minutes of Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell declaring a state of emergency Friday.
