Education is so important, but more and more students are coming out of college or graduate programs with huge amounts of debt from student loans.

In an effort to encourage those students to pursue careers in public service, Congressman John Sarbanes and the Under Secretary of the Federal Department of Education sat on a panel today, to talk about loan forgiveness programs.

Rep. Sarbanes says "a lot of people you know they go work at a public interest law firm, they want to become a teacher, they want to become a firefighter, you know, government service, and they want to stay in that job, but sometimes they can't afford to do it, because they've got this loan burden."

"The loan forgiveness gives them the ability to do that."

Dozens of students showed up for the forum today, so the panel is hoping many of them consider going into public service after completing their education.
