A group supporting the reintroduction of elk in western Maryland says it hopes the state will decide this spring whether to move forward on the proposal.

The Maryland Legislative Sportsmen's Foundation said Wednesday it's trying to muster the support of local government officials and sportsmen in Allegany and Garrett counties.

The Garrett County Commissioners have already declared their opposition. Allegany County hasn't weighed in.

The Department of Natural Resources says it will consider both counties' positions before deciding whether to conduct a study of potential elk habitat.

Proponents say elk would generate tourism dollars from sightseers and possibly hunters.

Opponents include farmers, who have raised concerns about crop and property damage.
