WASHINGTON - The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its response to the Anacostia River, based on initial lab results.
The lab results concluded that the reported spill is not petroleum-based or a hazardous material.
"We believe, based on the initial lab results as well as expert analysis of the results, that it is not a threat to public safety or the environment," said Lt. Cmdr. Randall Browm, the chief of the response department at Sector Baltimore.
"This has been a unified response from the state, local and federal agencies from the District of Columbia and Maryland focused on public safety and minimizing the environmental impact."
As additional results come in, the Coast Guard will remain in contact with the incident command members and local agencies and take appropriate actions if necessary.
