The serious accident which shut down all lanes of the 1-695 inner loop during this morning's rush hour was caused by a driver who fell asleep at the wheel of his truck according to Maryland State Police.
23-year-old Michael Angel Ocasio was driving a white 2006 GMC box truck on the beltway just south of Baltimore National Pike when state police believe he fell asleep and ran into the back of a flat bed trailer at about 6 a.m.
The driver of the flat bed trailer was taken to Northwest Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Ocasio had to be extracted from his truck by Baltimore County Fire and Emergency Services personnel and then he was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma by the Maryland State Police.
According to State Police Ocasio is being treated for severe leg injuries and is currently in serious condition.
All lanes of the inner loop were shut down while emergency personnel treated the victims. Drivers on the outer loop experienced serious delays while the crews were on the scene.
The accident is still under investigation and is being handled by Trooper Elgin with the Maryland State Police.
