COLUMBIA, Md. - Some adopt a highway, but Dodie Stewart chose Columbia Road.

"I've been picking the litter on this road for almost five years, and I can't even begin to tell you how many car parts I've picked up."

Steward spent the morning cleaning up debris from the overnight car crash near the entrance to the Fairway Hills Golf Course in the village of Dorsey Search.

"There were four young people in an Audi, a 2003 Audi, evidently going really, really fast going toward 175 and missed the curve and wrapped around the tree completely,” said Stewart, “and you can see the shattered glass from the windows wrapped around the tree."

But it may take a lifetime for Latshia Briggs-Hall to come to terms with the crash that killed 17-year old Quan Curtis, her boyfriend and the father of her 3 month old daughter.

"He turned his life completely around.  He'd been through so much and I got him to turn his life all the way around like he had a job (and) he’s got a baby.  He's been through so much and I just helped him pull it together and now he's gone."

Howard County Police say Curtis died instantly when he lost control of the Audi and wrapped it around this tree.

Rescue workers had to cut the top off of the car to extract three other occupants who were transported to Shock Trauma Center.

"At this point, we think that speed was definitely a factor and we're also looking into the very real possibility that the crash may have involved alcohol as well," said Sherry Llewellyn of the Howard County Police Department.

It’s a deadly combination on a road lined with trees where accidents have become commonplace.

"I think there's an accident here... probably two or three a month of one variety," said Stewart, "If you're not used to these curves, they're going to get you."

The three passengers who survived the crash, 21-year old Ofafami Ilupeju and Tres Jones and Dontrell Milner, who are both 20, remain hospitalized in serious condition.
