BEL AIR, Md. (WMAR) - Every parent can tell you exactly where they were when they heard those words, "your child has cancer," but for a Bel Air family their fight lead to a victory.
Sports is his game and Conner is his name. The 12-year-old wears his Ravens shirt with pride.
"My favorite part of school is gym, running around getting all of the thinking out," says Conner Riggs.
He wasn't thinking about running back when he was all of 3-years-old.
It was month after month, day after day, second after second that his and his Mom's world were turned upside down. Leukemia does that.
"One person had to quit their job to take care of Conner," remembers Conner's mom Allyson. "He was no longer able to go to daycare, go anywhere, really he was in the hospital all the time."
"It was a big change, it was a lot of hard times financially as well as emotionally. I have to tell you the biggest thing I have found that it was the one problem in life that I could not fix," she continued.
Whether you are 3 or 33, this cancer takes in all ages. Melody noticed some thing was not right, so a call to her doctor and some tests revealed her biggest fear.
"'I think you have Leukemia', and I was floored I didn't even know what to say," remembers Melody Tagliaferi-Cronin of her diagnosis.
After several rounds of treatment, "that put me in remission and luckily for me the timing was perfect. I went in October and had a bone marrow transplant," she says.
Allyson says "a lot of people used to say to me 'I don't know how you do it.' I used to always say to them, your never given a choice, you just do it because it's your son."
Two survivors sharing their story with a common goal.
"It's important because we got to stop it. It's bad we got to get close to a cure," says Melody.
