BEL AIR, Md. - Caught on camera---an armed robber running for the door inside the Subway sandwich shop in Bel Air’s Greenbrier Shopping Center, and hours later, the same man slipping out the front door of the Royal Farms Store on Churchville Road about a mile away.
"The robber came into the store. Both times the cashiers could see that he did have a handgun in his possession. He approached the cashiers (and) told them he wanted money out of the registers," said Edward Hopkins of the Harford County Sheriff’s Office.
Following the Subway robbery Wednesday night, the suspect ran towards the Seasons Apartments.
In the subsequent Royal Farms robbery, he was last seen running across the parking lot towards Route 543.
Customers who frequent the area say they’re not surprised he would strike when the businesses are most vulnerable.
"You figure it's probably an easy... you want to push somebody over, you do it at night. The least experienced people... not a whole lot of people around to see you or stop you,” said Patrick Heller of Abingdon, “It's the best time to do it and especially around here---you figure everybody has their guard down anyway because it's supposed to be a better part of town."
But police say if the robbery victims lacked any experience, they made up for it by keeping their wits.
"In one location to avoid injury, we believe that one cashier identified that there was another cashier so that the cashier wouldn't come out during the robbery and be startled and create the possibility of an injury to occur. So the cashiers were very smart in this situation," said Hopkins.
The same can’t be said for the suspect who apparently wore different clothing in each robbery, but sported the same distinctive black and white shoes and black bandana to cover his face.
