STREET, Md. -

Three young people are dead and two others seriously hurt after their car slammed into a tree and fell down a ravine.

Early Sunday morning crash team investigators were still on the scene of the horrific crash trying to piece together the events that led to up to it.

Police said just before 11:30 p.m. Saturday, 911 dispatchers got a call about a crash near Prospect Road and Mill Green Road near Street, Maryland. When officers and paramedics arrived at the scene they found a car broken into two pieces; one half had fallen into a deep ravine and the other half was about 100 feet away.

A man and a woman were found alive and were taken to Shock Trauma. Three others, two men and a woman were pronounced dead at the scene. The names of the victims are being withheld until family is notified, but police said they are from Harford and Baltimore Counties. Police also said that victims’ ages ranged from late teens to early twenties and that they appeared to be friends.

A preliminary investigation by Maryland State Police found that the car was driving east on Prospect Road when the driver lost control. The car became airborne and slammed into a tree where it split in half and tumbled down the ravine.

Police said alcohol does not seem to be a factor in the crash. Due to the severe damage to the car police can’t determine if the occupants were wearing seatbelts.

The investigation is ongoing.
