BEL AIR, Md. - Harford County Sheriff's Deputies are investigating a motorcycle accident that left one dead and one in serious condition.
Deputies responded to the single vehicle accident involving a 2005 Suzuki motorcycle that occurred in the 100 block of E. Jarrettsville Road at approximately 2:04 a.m., Sunday.
The motorcycle was operated by Matthew Hunter Cavey, age 23, of Delta, PA with passenger, Elijah Cole Kelley, age 16, of Arbutus, Md.
The preliminary investigation has determined that the motorcycle was traveling eastbound on E. Jarresttsville Road, when for an unknown reason, it struck a curb on the right hand side of the road.
Upon impact with the curb, Cavey lost control of the motorcycle causing it to slide approximately 100 feet on its side before striking a BGE utility pole and a telephone/cable box.
The motorcycle then traveled an additional 60 feet before coming to a rest on the westbound shoulder of Jarresttville Road.
Both Cavey and Kelley were wearing helmets at the time of the accident, however, the force of the crash caused their helmets to fly off.
Matthew Cavey was transported to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased at 3:20 a.m.
Elijah Kelley was flown to University of Maryland Shock Trauma by Delaware State Police where he is listed in serious condition.
Police say the two were coming from a party in the area.
