FOREST HILL, Md. - A never ending line of cars inched along to the drive-through, while the line of people to enter the Chick-fil-A restaurant in Forest Hill stretched outside its doors supporting CEO Dan T. Cathy’s comments on gay marriage.

"If you say same sex marriage is the same as my marriage that angers me... cause it ain't.  It's not.  It's not the same marriage,” said Bob Heinlein of Forest Hill, “So 50 years ago when I got married that's not what I signed up for."

"PC with a capital PC.  Definitely.  Mucho crapola as I call it," added Al Hannan of Fallston.

At a fast food chain, which closes its doors on the Sabbath, others say the comments were consistent and should have come as no surprise.

"They're not saying they're not going to serve them,” said Todd Hamm of Jarrettsville, “It's just they believe what they believe.  Christians are Christians."

"They believe what they believe.  They just let it be known.  Others let it be known,” said Susan Brooks of Conowingo, “That's why we live in America, so?"

Some of those “others”, like Reverend Lisa Ward of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Harford County, say this battle drawn over chicken sandwiches distracts from the real issue, which Maryland voters will decide in November.

"It creates this kind of sense of competition that's sort of "us" and "them", you're with us or against us thing that we don't need to do,” said Ward, “This is not what the issue is about."

In fact, in the minds of many, it’s raised yet another issue---the chicken magnate’s right to free speech.

"Everybody should be able to express it.  Does it change how they do business?  No,” said Amy Bollockus who is visiting her daughter in Bel Air, “I'm a teacher.  I'm against illegal immigration.  But you know what?  I still go and teach the illegals too.  They come in my classroom.  It's no different here."

Some gay rights groups have called for a kiss-in at Chick-fil-A restaurants on Friday to help get across their message.
