A Harford County teacher fights cancer and the school district

Music has always been the light of Nick Selvi's life.  Sadly a recent cancer diagnosis has dimmed it, leaving Selvi and his family facing their darkest hour.

"Am I going to survive this, what's my family going to do?" said Selvi.

The Forest Lakes Elementary music teacher learned he had stage four rectal cancer during Christmas.

He's 34, married with two young children, and his youngest Gabrielle has autism.  Selvi opted not to join the sick bank offered through open enrollment at HCPS. now between treatment and surgeries he needs four weeks covered.

"I'm finishing up my first round of radiation, I got three treatments left, said Selvi. "Then four to six weeks of now treatment and then surgery. Then another six to eight weeks of chemo."

Monday night the music teacher went before the Harford County Board of Education armed with 97 signatures from fellow teachers.

Some of those fellow teachers attended and asked the board if they could transfer their sick days to Selvi.

It's an H-R matter so the district wouldn't comment, but Selvi's heartbreaking story touched some board members.

Selvi understands the board’s dilemma......but that doesn't make it easy.

Now He and his family are praying for a little grace.
