ELKTON, Md. -  

Officials are investigating the cause of a three-alarm fire that devoured fire townhomes Thursday morning. 
 
The fire broke out shortly before 4 a.m. in a home in the 400 block of Willow Drive.
 
It tool nearly 50 firefighters about 90 minutes to get the blaze under control, however, there were no reported injuries. 
 
Investigators have determined that the fire started in an unoccupied town house and then spread from the rear of the structure to the adjacent homes. 
 
The occupants in one of the units smelled smoke as their won smoke alarms alerted them the the fire next door, which allowed them to escape unharmed. 
 
Two adults and four children are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
 
The damages to the five townhomes are estimated as $300,000. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
