NEW WINDSOR, Md. (WMAR) - A young child has died in a crash after police say her mother lost control of her Jeep Liberty on a wet road in Carroll County.

At about 11:00 p.m. Monday night, Maryland State Police Troopers responded to Route 31 at Wakefield Valley Road for reports of a crash.

The investigation revealed the driver and girl's mother, Rise Lorraine Berger, lost control on the slick road.

The Jeep slid off the shoulder and hit a utility pole on the passenger side.

As a result of the impact, Marissa Meridith Carter, 6, of Union Bridge, who was seated in a child safety seat in the rear passenger side of the Jeep, died.

Police say the child safety seat was not properly installed. Alcohol and speed are not believed to be factors in the crash.
