OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The engine and the tires are separated from a Chrysler Cirrus, driven by Melvin Bettis, 22, who died at the scene. Kendrick Brown didn't believe the news until he saw the car for himself.
"I parked my car back there and cut down here and come to find out it's my brother," said Brown.
Another family is missing 60-year-old Andre Murphy. Baltimore County police say he was driving a Mercury Grand Marquis when Bettis crossed the center turn lane on McDonough Rd. at Star Cir. in Owings Mills.
Joy Davis and many kids heard it.
"It was a loud boom," said Davis. "It was an actual body out of the car. It was like just laying there," she said.
Bettis and Murphy died at the scene. Baltimore County police say he was speeding.
“It don't sound like his nature at all. He's not the type to be speeding," said Brown.
But neighbors who came running out of their home after 2 o'clock say speed is a concern everyday on McDonough.
"They're always speeding up and down this road. That's why I suggested we put another light in in between the two lights," said Darnell Manning, a neighbor.
"It was only a matter of time ‘til we had another accident," said Nathan Jackson, a neighbor.
Jackson's wife is the president of the homeowner's association nearby.
"She's been working and calling, as well, to get police to come by and stop some people and give them some tickets for speeding as well as getting in a stop light," said Jackson.
Police say Bettis also hit an SUV driven by a 33-year-old woman. She was not injured.
Kendrick Brown watches his brother's car go up on a tow truck, dreading the moment he goes back home.
"It's tough to even sit right here. But I think it's going to be even tougher for me to go back and look at our mother's eyes, look at our sister's eyes, look at our father's eyes. That's gonna be really tough," said Brown.
McDonough Rd. was shut down for five hours. It reopened around 7 p.m.
