PHOENIX, Md. (WMAR) -

One person was killed and another was seriously injured in a crash in Phoenix Wednesday morning.

The crash happened just before 5:30 a.m. on Old York Road near Paper Mill Road.

Police say that 23-year-old Stephen Christian Kirsch, Jr., of the unit block of Valley Forest Court, was driving south on York Road in a 2002 Jetta.

Also in the car was 34-year-old Joshua George Gustin, of the 900 Block of Crosswind Place in Cockeysville.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Kirsch was speeding down the street when his car quickly veered off of the left side of the road.  The vehicle then hit a tree and split into two.

The front of the car jolted into another tree, tossing Gustin from the vehicle.  The rear of the car continued travelling southbound on York Road before stopping.

Kirsch was taken to Sinai with life threatening injuries, but Gustin was pronounced dead on the scene.
