Student arrested for starter pistol in school

DUNDALK, Md. (WMAR) - A Baltimore County student has been arrested and charged after bringing a gun to school, Baltimore County Police say.

According to Charles Herndon, spokesperson for Baltimore County Public Schools, the administration at Holabird Elementary School in Dundalk was alerted of a student who had a gun on school grounds.

Upon a search of the student's locker, school staff located an inoperable starter pistol.

Starter pistols are typically used to start races and usually emit smoke when shots are fired.  These types of guns carry blank shells.

The school disciplined the student, and police in Baltimore County arrested and charged the 11-year-old boy.

The principal of the school sent a letter home with the student outlining the aforementioned events.

Herndon explained that it was determined that the weapon was not intended to intimidate or harm anyone. 

The boy is charged as a juvenile with possession of a deadly weapon and possession of a deadly weapon on school property.
