WOODLAWN, Md. - On Monday a Woodlawn High School student was hit by a car while walking to school. It happens more than you might think especially when it comes to kids.

This morning ABC2 News’ Sherrie Johnson was live York Road in Towson -- not far from Rodgers Forge Elementary School and Dumbarton Middle School.

These two schools have a large population of walkers. Many of the walkers cross here at York Road which is a very busy intersection.

There are crossing guards here to help -- but it can still be dangerous for kids.

In 2009-- more than 4,000 pedestrians died in traffic crashes. That's according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Cross walk safety is very important. School administrators want kids to be aware of their surroundings and stay safe.

This morning officer Rebecca Sewell with the Baltimore County Police Department gave these traffic safety tips:

  • Stop at the curb
  • Stop and look both ways, left then right then left again.
  • If you see a car wait until it goes by
  • If a car is parked -- make sure there is no driver and the car is not running.
  • When no cars are coming walk, do not run across the road.
