The incident happened at about 2:30 p.m. at the Rosewood Center on Rosewood Lane, a facility often used in police training exercises.
The trainee was flown to Shock Trauma and police say his condition is very grave.
During a press conference, Anthony Guglielmi with the Baltimore City Police says that the trainee was shot by an instructor who is with the Baltimore City Police. Police have not released the name of the trainee stating that the family is from very far away, have requested to not be identified yet and have not yet made all the notifications that are needed.
During a quick appearance before the media, Dr. Thomas Scalia said that the victim, believed to be in his 40's, is still in surgery and it's too soon to tell what permanent damage has been done. When asked where the trainee was shot, the Doctor said in the head and pointed to his forehead.
Chief Anthony Williams with the University of Maryland says that thoughts and prayers are with the trainee and that he is in the hands of the best medical care. Chief Williams also says that this is the trainees first law enforcement job, which he started in July 2012.
Commissioner Batts with City Police has suspended all training until the investigation into this incident has been completed stating safety reasons. The Commissioner did not answer when asked why live rounds were being used during the session.
Since the incident happened on Maryland State property, the Maryland State Police will be handling the investigation. Corporal AJ McAndrew with MSP says that both the Baltimore City Police and the University Police are cooperating with them and interviews are being conducted.
Officials who spoke at tonight's press conference all extended prayers and thoughts to the trainee and his family.
A second trainee, from Baltimore City, was also injured in this incident when he was cut by some glass at the training facility. Officials say his injuries are considered non-life threatening.
