REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Ronald Melvin was shot and killed after attacking a police officer with a sword Thursday night.
The altercation happened at 11:40 p.m. in the 400 block of Highmeadow Road in Reisterstown.
Officers were serving a search warrant in connection with an attempted murder case.
When officers entered the bedroom upstairs, Melvin attacked them with a sword. An officer opened fire to thwart the attack.
Ronald Melvin Cox Jr., 48, was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:46 p.m. The body of the suspect will be transported to the Chief Medical Examiner of Maryland for an autopsy.
No officers were injured.
Police are withholding the name of the officer involved in the shooting, but is said to be a 17-veteran assigned to the Tactical Unit. He is currently on routine administrative leave pending a review of the case.
