PIKESVILLE, Md. - Holding his wife's hand and flanked by his impressive defense team, Doctor Mark Midei took the first step in clearing his name.

"I can promise every one of my patients that what I did is what I would want for myself, for anybody in my family, my mother my father. They were treated appropriately and with the highest regard for their well being," said Midei.

Midei is accused of performing unnecessary heart procedures at St. Joseph Medical Center in Baltimore County.

One hundred and one lawsuits have already been filed against the cardiologist after St. Joseph removed Midei from duty last year.

The hospital claims the doctor implanted unnecessary stents in its cardiology patients; his attorneys say the star physician was the fall guy as St. Joseph became the target of a federal investigation.

"Dr. Midei is just a good guy and a good medical practitioner and he has a great group of lawyers that's going to protect him and pursue this with all our vigor," said lead attorney Stephen Snyder.

That vigor comes in a 50 page multi million dollar lawsuit filed by Midei Thursday against St. Joseph and its parent company Catholic Health Initiatives.

It claims the hospital used “deceit and trickery” to commit fraud, breach of contract and permanently tarnishing what was a brilliant and highly respected career.

"They offered Doctor Midei up as its sacrificial lamb when only days earlier these defendants were publically parading this doctor as one of the nations most highly skilled and ethical interventional cardiologists," said Snyder.

The hospital says it will defend itself against Midei's claims in what is sure to be a long legal battle between a doctor, a hospital and their patients.
