TOWSON, Md. (WMAR) -

The Archdiocese of Baltimore has announced that St. Joseph's Medical Center will continue to operate as a Catholic hospital.

St. Joseph's has been a Catholic operation since 1864 and is now being purchased by the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) and will operate as a UMMS center beginning in December.

According to a news release, since the hospital is being sold to a non-Catholic entity, the Vatican must approve it to operate as Catholic.

"St. Joseph Medical Center has provided quality, Catholic healthcare to people of all faiths for over 145 years," Archbishop Lori said.
