The first of two planned mosquito sprayings has occurred in the Milford area to suppress the transmission of West Nile Virus (WNV), where a human case of WNV was identified. Weather-permitting, the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) will conduct the second mosquito spraying on Thursday, September 13 after 7:30 p.m. with streets added to the spray zone.

At the request of the Sudbrook Community Association, the Sudbrook Park area was not sprayed on September 6 and will not be sprayed on September 13. The Ralston Community Association requested that the remaining streets in their community, which were not in the planned spray zone, be included in the September 13 spraying. MDA has agreed to include those streets. See the attached, revised map for details. MDA recommends that residents in the affected area stay indoors during spraying to minimize direct contact with the spray material.

Spraying will be conducted using MDA spray trucks. The spray material, Biomist 30-30 contains the active ingredient permethrin, and is approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. For the product label and Material Safety Data Sheet, visit the MDA website . For information on health and environmental effects of permethrin, refer to the National Pesticide Information Center Technical Sheet .

Mosquitoes can carry a number of diseases, including WNV, which is still present in the Baltimore area.  WNV is a disease that is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected animal. In humans, WNV generally causes either no symptoms, or mild, flu-like illness, but it can also be deadly.

Remember, you can help reduce the number of mosquitoes in areas outdoors where you live, work or play, by draining sources of standing water. In this way, you reduce the number of places mosquitoes can lay their eggs and breed.
