Public Works: Don't open fire hydrants

BALTIMORE - City officials sent out a warning Tuesday, asking residents not to open fire hydrants as a way of cooling off in the extreme heat.
According to the Department of Public Works, a hyrdrant's flow rate is 1,000 gallons per minute. The force of the water can be dangerous.
Opening hydrants can also decrease water pressure for people in homes and businesses nearby. This is especially dangerous near hospitals. It can also damage a water main.
Officials are asking citizens to find other ways to stay cool such as using a garden hose.
