BALTIMORE - A person remains in critical condition Saturday and another is dead following a shooting at the Empire House in Baltimore Friday.

Officials with the Baltimore Police Department say the shooting at the Empire House occurred just before 4 a.m. Friday. The two victims were taken to a local hospital where one, a 40-year-old male, died later in the day.  The second victim is in critical but stable condition at Johns Hopkins Hospital, as of Saturday morning police said.

Police describe the shooter as an average height black male with a medium build who was wearing dark clothes and a black ball cap.  The second suspect is described as a short, heavy set black female wearing dark clothing and a skull cap. Police said the shooting may have been an attempted robbery.

The Empire House was built in 1874 as the private residence of William Pinkney Whyte, then governor of Maryland. The 40-foot wide brownstone was his home throughout his extensive political career. After his death in 1908 it served as the home to a prestigious medical practice for over 70 years. In 1996 it was purchased by it’s current owners who returned it to a single family home. The Empire House is touted on the businesses’ website as a private residence with a fully furnished corporate apartment on the third floor and a large bedroom with private bath on the second floor. While the Empire House does have the look and feel of a bed and breakfast, according to its website, it is not yet a bed and breakfast.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Baltimore City Police at 410-396-2100.
