Major construction began at 9p.m. Wednesday on Interstate 895.

It's expected to cause heavy traffic delays at the Harbor Tunnel through the end of summer.

Crews will replace concrete decking on a four-lane bridge south of the toll plaza.

The worst delays are expected during the first two weeks of August, when traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction.

The Maryland Transportation Authority urges motorists to avoid Interstate 895 until the project is finished. Drivers should use the Fort McHenry Tunnel or Francis Scott Key Bridge until construction is complete.
