BALTIMORE, Md. - A Baltimore City Police spokesperson says that a 28-year-old man is in the hospital following an early morning shootout with a police officer.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:10 a.m. on Saturday.

Investigators say the  nine-year veteran officer was patrolling the 9th District when he came upon the unidentified suspect shooting at another person in the 2000 block of Girard Avenue.

The suspect then reportedly fired on the officer.

Police say the officer then returned fire and shot the suspect in the hand.

The officer was not injured but the man was taken to Sinai Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Once he is released, the police spokesperson says the man will be charged with several counts of attempted murder and gun violations.

The officer has been assigned to administrative duties for several days.
