Man sentenced in Medicaid fraud scheme

A Woodstock man will be spending the next year in prison and pay restitution after he was convicted of a Medicaid fraud scheme. 

 

Attorney General Douglas Gansler announced today that Spencer Brown, 51, was sentenced by a judge to five years in prison with all but one year suspended. 

 

Brown had previously pleaded guilty to one count of Medicaid fraud for billing the Medicaid program $156,918 for services that were never rendered. 

 

Upon completing his jail term, Brown will be place on a 5 year supervised probation. Brown must also complete 150 hours of community service and pay $156,918 in restitution. 

 

The charges arose out of claims for dental service submitted to the State Medicaid program by Brown, in his capacity as an employee of his wife, Lisa Valentine, D.D.S., from January 2008 through November 2010. 

 

"We hope this sentence serves as a deterrent to those few in the health care industry who seek to betray the trust of their patients and defraud the taxpayer," said Attorney General Gansler. "This defendant rightfully received a severe punishment for defrauding a system that helps the most vulnerable among us."
