BALTIMORE - Mary Kate Morris has always played the guitar to relax. Recently, the music has helped her deal with what she calls discrimination at a Ravens game.
Morris is a lesbian and says she was showing public affection for her girlfriend by a concession stand during half time.
"Every once in a while I'd just hug into her and just stand there waiting for the lines to die down. And we kissed probably a handful of times, but there was a straight couple next to us just going to town," said Morris.
The incident happened September 26th when the Ravens played the Browns at M&T Bank Stadium.
Morris was at her first Ravens game with her girlfriend “Nic” Marchetto. According to Morris, a security guard didn't like what he saw.
Marchetto went to buy french fries and walked away with a cup for ketchup. Morris says she meant no harm and offered to pay for the cup, but the same security guard who told them to stop kissing wanted them out.
"He was like we have a problem. You stole the cup that you're eating your fries out of. Well Nic was like, 'Are you kidding? How much do you want for it? I didn't know cups were this sacred here," Morris said.
Morris says security told her she would have to leave.
Kevin Byrne, Senior V.P. of Public and Community Relations released a statement saying "We're aware of the incident, and we're satisfied with the action taken by the concessionaire, security and police."
Making her story public is a big step for this 31-year-old who's putting her personal relationships on the line to make sure her rights are protected.
"There are certain people that don't know that I'm gay and this is going to be a big shock to them, but I feel like this is completely worth it," Morris said.
The couple is working with the ACLU and may file a lawsuit.
