Fells Point was a ghost town early Monday morning. All that remained was the slush mess created from the mixture of steady rain and sand dumped near the intersection of Thames and Broadway .
Time had run out for residents and business owners to get sand from the pile in attempt to secure their property. Weather conditions as of early Monday morning were only expected to get worse. In fact, forecasters said some of the most dangerous winds from the hybrid Hurricane Sandy are in the outer areas of the “frankenstorm.”
Quiet. Every few minutes a police squad car would drive by, bringing you back to civilization.
A high wind warning remains in effect from until 8 p.m. Tuesday for the area. By 8 a.m. Monday, weather forecasters say there will be winds of 30 to 40 mph. Wind speeds are expected to increase around noon to 35 to 45 mph with hurricane force wind gusts 60 to 70 mph lasting into early Tuesday morning.
City officials have not been coy about what they expect. Fells Point, they say, will flood and will most likely lose power. On Friday, a state of emergency was declared for Baltimore City. Making sandbags available in Fells Point was one of the mayor’s first moves .
Sunday, the mayor made sure the police department was fully staffed , emergency responders were prepared and public works officials were ready to act.
