BALTIMORE -

One man died and a firefighter was injured when a two-alarm fire ripped through an East Baltimore rowhome early Sunday.

Baltimore City firefighters were called to the 1700 block of N. Broadway at 5:40 Sunday morning. When crews arrived they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the second and third floor windows.

With reports of people trapped, firefighters battled through intense heat and fire conditions. Crews found an unconscious man in a bedroom on the third floor. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.  The man’s identity has not been released.

While battling the fire one firefighter suffered a minor burn to his ear and was treated at the scene.

The Red Cross is assisting four families affected by the fire.

The cause of this fire remains under investigation.  It is unclear if the home had working smoke detectors.
