BALTIMORE - Baltimore City Police are looking into a crash that damaged a large portion of the iron fence surrounding the Washington Monument.
Police say the crash happened overnight when a Chrysler Van struck the fence.
Karen Footner with the Mount Vernon Place Conservancy tells ABC 2 News that the crash resulted in damage to a large portion of the southeast side.
At this point, Footner is uncertain what steps are being taken to secure the monument or to what extent the damage can be repaired.
The damaged fence encases the monument and was built in the 1830's.
Police are looking into the possibility of alcohol being a contributing factor in the crash. It also appears that the driver of the van "bailed-out" and fled the scene before police arrived.
At last check police do not have any suspects and the investigation is on going.
