Fourteen years ago Rita Hester was murdered in what prosecutors call a transgender hate crime. The person responsible for her death was never caught, but Hester's memory lives on through Transgender Remembrance Day.
On Tuesday, November 20 there will be a community vigil to mark Transgender Remembrance Day. It will take place at the First Unitarian Church in Baltimore, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
This day started after Hester was murdered on November 28, 1998. Her death kicked off the "Remembering Our Dead," according to the group Trans Maryland. The event then evolved into the Transgender Remembrance Day.
Everyone is invited to attend Tuesday night's vigil.
