BALTIMORE - The Better Business Bureau has come out with ten helpful ways to avoid becoming the victim of identity theft.
The top ten tips include:
1. Shred statements and applications that you no longer want, including credit card applications, insurance forms, and financial statements
2. Never leave ATM or credit card receipts behind
3. Don't use obvious passwords like your name or birthdate
4. Do not give out your social security number, carry your card with you, or put your number on checks
5. Never give out personal information unless you know who you are dealing with
6. Never click on links sent in unsolicited emails
7. Keep your computer secure. Use firewalss, anti-spyware and antivirus software, and keep them up to date.
8. Add your name to the "Do not call registry" at 888-382-1222
9. Monitor your credit report at least twice a year
10. Review your credit card statements carefully
The Better Business Bureau is offering a free shred event on Saturday April 16th from 8 a.m. to noon at Arundel Mills Marketplace and The Avenue in White Marsh.
