Baltimore mayor appoints new parks director

BALTIMORE (AP) -  

The city of Baltimore has a new director of its department of recreation and parks.
 
Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake announced Tuesday that she has named Ernest W. Burkeen Jr. the director of the department. Burkeen's appointment is effective Dec. 17.
 
Burkeen has worked in parks departments for over 30 years. He previously headed parks departments in Detroit, Fort Lauderdale and, most recently, Miami.
 
Burkeen has a bachelor's degree in physical education from Michigan State University and a master's degree in recreation administration, also from Michigan State. His salary will be $125,000.
