BALTIMORE - Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley described the event as another victory for Maryland in the state's efforts to provide the best education in America.
Renovations to school libraries in the Baltimore City Public Schools district were unveiled Wednesday.
The governor wasted no time in praising voters, parents, school officials and the Weinberg Foundation for the work that went into changes aimed at improving the learning environment. O'Malley said the work exemplifies words by Frederick Douglas.
"We are one. Our cause is one, and we must help each other if we are to succeed."
O'Malley touted the achievement gap in Baltimore City schools being narrowed. He said changes in the city school system like the library project have fueled the state's progress on the education front.
The multi-million dollar project was made possible in part by funding provided by the Weinberg Foundation. The foundation, and its 30 businesses -- non profit and government partners, are working toward a goal of transforming school libraries into a place of learning and a love of reading.
The reveal kicked off at Thomas Johnson Elementary/Middle School at 10:30 a.m. It was showcased by children singing and wide eyes of students eager to make use of new space and new books.
"I'm really excited about the new library," said sixth-grader Emily Nolan. "The atmosphere and great selection of books will help you get lost in the world of books. ...This new library will help further our education and expand our imaginations."
