GAMBRILLS, Md. (WMAR) -

An 18-year-old is dead following an icy morning commute and crash wit a cement truck.

At about 7:44 a.m., officers responded to the reports of a crash involving multiple vehicles on Waugh Chapel Road near Silver Way in Gambrills.

Officers found two vehicles, a 2003 Mack cement truck driven by Gerald Carpenter, 60, of Annapolis, and a 2001 Chevrolet S-10, driven by Alexis Lewis, 18, that had collided on the westbound lane and shoulder.

Emergency personnel attempted to render aid, but the injuries to Lewis were extensive and she was pronounced dead on the scene.

The investigation has revealed that Lewis was traveling east on Waugh Chapel Road when the truck failed to navigate a curve in the road and began to rotate in a counterclockwise direction. The S-10 continued to spin as it crossed the double yellow lines, and ultimately striking the cement mixer, which was traveling west.

Both vehicles continued toward the shoulder of the road, and finally struck a guardrail. Lewis was ejected from the S-10 during the crash.

Police say there is evidence to suggest that the wet and icy roads may have contributed to this crash.

Anyone with any further information is asked to call the Traffic Safety Section at 410-222-8573.
