PASADENA, Md. - Images captured by witnesses show flames shooting through the front of the two-story rowhouse, but it appears, down in the basement, 30-year old Christopher Roodra was unaware of the fire’s magnitude.
“We heard, 'Help! Help!' and it was faint... and I was like, 'Spencer, do you hear that?’ said Andrea Blake. “And he was like, 'Yeah,' so he took off back here through the woods."
20-year old Spencer Blake found the back gate locked and threw his body against a section of the wooden privacy fence knocking it down.
He found the homeowner trying to extinguish the fire on his own.
"I guess he was in the basement with his garden hose trying to put it out. He's like, 'Help! Help!' Spencer said. "...He thought his wife and baby were still in there."
In the meantime, Spencer’s father had run around to the front of the rowhouse to alert neighbors.
He doubled back around to the basement, and assured Roodra that his wife and four-month-old baby girl had already gotten out when he finally allowed himself to be rescued for a second time.
"He did suffer some serious, but non-life threatening burn injuries,” said Anne Arundel Fire Division Chief Michael Cox, “He was treated at the scene by fire department paramedics and ultimately was airlifted to the burn unit at Hopkin's Bayview Hospital in Baltimore."
While the source of the fire is still under investigation, witnesses say it may have been a candle in the basement.
We’re told Roodra is a Prince George’s County school administrator, and his wife is a teacher at Glen Burnie High School.
